Essential Travel Tips on Special Tours

Exploring Georgia by bicycle

The remote and scenic Caucasus mountains set the stage for Georgia, a slice of sumptuous, natural beauty. Though squarely within Eurasia, its remote and isolated geography helped to craft its unique culture that lives on today in its proud and fiercely independent people.

The legendary Caucasus mountains are more than just beautiful to look at. The velvety green range is the perfect playground for outdoor adventurers of all kinds.

Wind your way around peaks on black rock trails, hewn into the sides of mountains. Ford rushing streams on horseback. From your valley campsite, ascend to the nearest ridge on foot and catch your breath at the 360-degree view.

Bike Touring Tips – Before You Go

What clothing and equipment should you take on your cycling tour? It may seem like a mundane subject to think about when all you want to do is hop on your bike and go. Yet, it is absolutely essential that you get the gear right!

The bottom line is that you have booked a cycling tour because you enjoy cycling. You want to soak up the culture of a new country at a relaxed pace from the comfortable saddle of your bike.

Bicycle Touring Checklist – What You Need

  • ZWater bottle or hydration pack
  • ZSunglasses or clear lenses
  • ZSunscreen
  • ZSweat bands/caps/bandana
  • ZWaterproof rain booties/gaiters

Ensure you have quality wet-weather gear

Invest in good quality wet weather gear – including a rain jacket and pack cover. You won’t regret it!

“On a social ride, which for all intents and purposes the vast majority of organized cycle tours are, there is nothing worse than riding in the rain without adequate protection – especially if it is cold rain!”
– Garry Corbett

Replicate your comfortable set-up

Whilst it’s not a requirement on our cycling trips that you bring all your own gear if you already have a comfortable set-up at home, it’s a good idea to replicate it on your trip.

This could include your saddle, clip-ins for SPD’s and ergonomic handlebar grips. If you don’t have these, buying them is not essential. It’s just recommended to replicate your own set-up if you already have one.

Cycling gloves make a big difference

Cycling gloves are another addition to your wardrobe that is highly recommended when cycle touring. While gloves may seem like a small consideration, they serve a number of very important functions including grip and sun protection.

First and foremost, gloves keep the hot sun off the back of your hands, but on a more practical level, they stop blisters, chafing, and other discomfort caused by the constant friction of handlebars and road vibration against the skin of your hands – especially when they are damp with sweat.

Comfort is key

All your contact points must be really comfortable including your hands, backside, and feet. If you are not used to long periods of riding, we recommend buying a gel seat pad or padded cycling pants.

Wear synthetic clothing – not cotton

Carefully consider the clothing you pack before you leave and consider investing in some quick-drying clothes. Cotton does not dry quickly and can hold too much moisture.

Horse Riding in Georgia

There is no better way to explore Georgia than on horseback! As this country has many untouched lands, many of its best areas can only be accessed on foot or by horse. Pristine open meadows are the perfect setting for our fast gallops! Horses are spirited and forward-going, loving the wind blowing past just as much as you!

Georgia Weather and Climate for horsriding

Georgia can be divided into 2 distinct climate zones. The west of the country, along the coast, features a humid Mediterranean climate, while the rest of the country, in the interior benefits from a dryer continental climate.

The Caucasus Mountains allow moderation of the climate in the plains. The mean annual precipitation varies from 300 to 600 mm in eastern Georgia.

– Spring (April to May) is one of the best times to visit because it is usually dry and temperatures start warming up. However, you should keep in mind that nights can still be cold in the mountains.

– Summer (June to August) in Georgia can be hot but there is generally a pleasant breeze in the mountains, preventing it from being unbearable. You should be aware that there is some risk of rain at the beginning of the season.

– Autumn (September & October) is an amazing time to visit as you can still benefit from mild weather and a few precipitations. Moreover, the fall colors are splendid in the mountains.

– Riding tours are not offered during winter (November to March) because of the risk of snow.
